‘Rooted in Practice’ Carmarthen School of Art staff exhibition statement

Carmarthen School of Art at Coleg Sir Gar has been providing art education since 1854, being one of the first Art Schools set up in Britain following the Great Exhibition in Crystal Palace in London. The School has been continually evolving ever since, responding to social, creative and cultural developments and the changing needs of its students, industry and wider community.

Carmarthen School of Art has a national reputation for skill-based teaching & learning underpinned by academic rigor. Rooted in craft practice, specialist making skills are a focus in each department and as such students have the rare opportunity to become expert in iron casting, weaving, ceramics or jewellery to name but a few.

2018 marked the 40 year anniversary of the School being based at its current location on Jobs Well Road in Carmarthen. The occasion was celebrated with an exhibition of staff work curated by Amelia Kilvington at the college, highlighting the fact that all have notable personal careers which compliment and inform their academic practice. This exhibition at Craft in the Bay curated by Laura Thomas offers an expanded in-depth focus on those working within craft and applied arts.
